Irene O'Garden will speak about her new memoir Risking the Rapids: How My Wilderness Adventure Healed My Childhood.
An accomplished writer, Irene O'Garden has been featured and anthologized by several different collectives. She is the author of the best selling Broadway play Women on Fire, and her extensive poetry has been collected in numerous volumes. O'Garden's newest work, Risking the Rapids, is an incredibly personal and emotional memoir about her own childhood.
Growing up with a cold mother, a busy TV-personality father, and six other siblings in the Midwest proved troubling and hard for young Irene O'Garden. After her brother's shocking death in 2014, Irene (aged 62) and her family looked for closure by fording Montana's Bob Marshall Wilderness. What should have been a gentle trip downstream turned into a breath-taking, dangerous white water adventure. A wilderness adventure told alongside O'Garden's moving account of her childhood, Risking the Rapids is a book no one will want to put down until they're through.
